My first task! While I should be doing my summer project…( I have started, honest!) This task is about Identity development and can also be about Illustration. Okay, so I obviously can’t really write what it says word for word, so I’m going to try and do everything in my own words.
THE CHALLENGE: Design a logo for yourself that is informed only by the answers to these questions. (I will put my answers under the questions)
What are my three strengths as a designer?
Design for print- working in a format, whether it’s one I’ve created or one thats been given to me. Timekeeping, I get it done on time, no arguments. Hmm, a third thing. Possibly my researching? I try and find out as much as I can before carrying out the task.
My idea generation isn’t very quick, which I see as a weakness. It takes me along time before I can get my creative thinking cap on.
What’s my favourite colour?
What designers do I love?
Herb Lubalin was one of the first designers that I really started to admire for his typography, but now I take more inspiration from designers such as Yulia Brodskaya, for her paper crafts.
What design work do I enjoy?
I have a few that I REALLY enjoy, magazine design and corporate identity especially. But I also enjoy book design, making book and packaging.
What kind of work do I want to do in the future?
All of the above and more. I want to get better at advertising, so I need to do more of that. I want to do work that people go ‘Wow, I wish I did that’ like I walk around doing!
After some sketching (which I haven’t scanned in, sorry!) and some playing about on Illustrator, I came up with quite a simple design. I’m not saying this is the one I would stick with, not sure its imaginative enough.
I also took it a little further, and started designing a business card. I love corporate identity, but doing it for yourself is hard!
I like the idea of using a playing card, so I might pursue this a little further.
